What an exciting week with our CrossFit kids! Welcome Tate and Finlee to the team, you both crushed your first CrossFit workouts!
This week we focused on practicing existing skills and learning some new ones and discovered new fun warm up games.
We took another spin at our obstacle course running skills, and this time we went for speed and measured our times. We also tried kettlebell races, crossed the swamp across the gym and did some new warm up games for music. (We did the Hokey Pokey while holding a plank, and a lot of burpees for Thunderstruck, which was the kids choice. They have such good taste in music. :-))
On Tuesday we had a weightlifting day as usual. We practiced our angry gorilla backs with dumbbell deadlifts and learned how to do dumbbell hang cleans and push presses. Our newest members practiced these skills with a medicine ball and soon they will be ready to use the dumbbells, too.
On Thursday we enjoyed another gymnastics focused day. We did almost the same workout what the adult CrossFit class had, doing toes to bars and handstand push ups. You’ve read it right! We have practiced toes to bars before, so the kids could walk the class through our usual progressions, toes to kettlebell on the ground, hanging knee raises and toes to bar on the bar. Handstand push ups were a new skill to learn. We practiced first the progressions we have learned before, push ups, pike push ups and wall walks. Everyone was able to do wall walks! And then we took turns to learn how to do a handstand push up negative on the mats and some kids pushed back up doing a real handstand push up! We are going to keep practicing this new skill, I was amazed by the awesome efforts!
